Once in Bulgaria, I made sure to ask about all the taxes I had to pay including disinfectant tax and vingette (road tax). At least the Bulgarians have the decency to advertise the fact that you need to pay these taxes every few kilometers.

 

Although it was middle of the day, there were prostitutes lined up on the side of the road waving their legs as the lorries went past. That sight was almost surreal. After a while it was so common you didn't even notice. I mean what is unusual about seeing a woman wearing high heels, knickers and a crop top leather jacket walking down the side of a major road.

 

I arrived at Veliko Tarnovo to the welcoming invite signs of the comfort hotel. I followed the signs to a nice family run hotel with a spectacular view. An old Jewish couple on holiday from Israel befriended me. They were born in Bulgaria and had moved to Israel a few decades ago. We had lunch at a restaurant recommended on the lonely planet. The food was delicious. I spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the student infested city and reading my emails at an internet cafe.
