13/14 August
Into Sao Paulo for 2 days. It has a reputation of being a dangerous city and I think it is justified. Although I received no hassles, it was the sort of place where being at the wrong place at the wrong time will cause you problems. I felt comfortable being in a group but I wouldn't like to go there on my own. Like any major cities there are no go areas'for tourists, which incidently were only a couple of streets away from our hotel. It is the largest city in Brazil (population 17m) and the 3rd largest metropolis in the world after Shanghi and Mexico city. It really is a vast place and 2 days do not do it justice. The metro system is efficient and safe in the day and early evening so this helped me get round and do as much as I could. The highlight in such little time are the views from the Italian tower (one of the largest buildings in the city). From here you get some understanding of the size of the place - it went on for miles and miles.
