We got up at 4 so that we could get to Heathrow for our flight at 6:50. Whose idea was it to book the early flight?! We flew Alitalia which was pretty good, comfy and only 2 hours. We had magnificent views of the alps as we flew over them!
When we arrived at Fiumicino airport we had to get a train into Termini station then the metro out to Lepanto. It was pretty straightforward to find our way out to the train station at the airport. The train took ages to get to Termini because it was quite slow. I think the tickets were €12 each, then we got one-day metro tickets for €4 each. Once we got to Lepanto it was quite easy to find our huge Hotel Cicerone.
Once we were up to our room and organised, we headed out onto the streets of Roma. We generally just followed our noses around, first to Piazza Navona, across to the Pantheon, up the shopping strip Via del Corso to the Spanish Steps. At this point it started raining and didn't stop for over an hour. At first we took shelter in the church at the top of the steps, but eventually we bought a cheap umbrella from a street seller for €4 and headed into the Picino gardens. We were heading for a pizza place I had been recommended on a website, Bella Napoli, so we headed through the Villa Borghese, past the Galleria Borghese and through to Via Alessandria, near the old city walls. We had a couple of drinks in a nearby bar for a bit before eating our yummy pizza. We had intended to get the metro back to the hotel rather than walking, but once we were back at Termini we soon realised that the metro A line doesn't work after 9pm and we would have to take a bus instead. Fortunately the buses were easy to find and the river helped us work out where to get off. We did way more on the first day than we orginally had in mind but we had a good walk around and saw lots of the city, even though the weather wasn't brilliant.
