Peter and Kirin dropped me down at the Reef Fleet terminal this morning for my trip to Green Island. The island is about an hour away from Cairns on the big catamaran.
When we arrived there was a rain squall there, so we had to wait for about 20 mins for that to clear, but after that it was a beautiful sunny day, not too hot with a few fluffy clouds. I got my snorkelling equipment from the boat and headed straight in for a snork at high tide. There was a lot of seagrass close to the beach but there were quite a lot of brightly coloured fish around, especially once I got out to the coral. I saw some parrot fish and angel fish and a school of lil zebra fish... blue sea stars and spirobranchus worms.. and giant clams with their brightly coloured lips. I saw a school of huge silver fish too - i'm not sure what they were.
I headed for land and back to the boat for the buffet lunch. It wasn't much to shout about, just some cold meat and salads. After lunch I went walkies around the island which only took about half an hour. The resort only takes up a tiny corner of the island, the rest is national park and covered in rainforest. There were a lot of rails running around on the ground (those are birds by the way), and once i got into the rainforest there were more birds flitting around.
I didn't go back in for another snorkel because I thought I only had a little bit of time left. I could have gone back in because the boat wasn't leaving until a 1/2 hour later. Ah well, I had a yummy violet crumble icecream instead.
The trip back to cairns was a bit bumpier than the way over, but I was sitting up on the top deck so it wasn't too sickly. In all it was a very enjoyable day! The island is beautiful, although I thought Big Cat cruises were a bit overpriced at $81 including lunch. I had a lovely time although I missed Shane terribly because I knew how much he would have loved it. Oh well, next time!
