This morning was a little bit showery so we decided to wait until tomorrow to try to climb mountains and instead headed into Brecon to find some breakfast. Not many of the shops were open when we arrived at 8:30 but we got nice breakfast rolls at a bakery and ate them on a bridge with a view of the ruined castle, inbetween rain showers. There wasn't much information in the Breacon TIC so we decided to drive up to the Mountain Information Centre which is actually up in the mountains themselves.
When we got closer we realised that there was a summer fair on there this weekend. There was a huge marquee with all sorts of crafty and foody market stalls, but it was raining outside so it didn't feel particularly summery! Instead we headed inside to find some information and left with an OS 1:25k map of the national park, plus an idea of a short walk around Brecon.
Back in Brecon it was much more busy than it had been earlier in the day, and the showers had started to dry out leaving the rest of the afternoon quite sunny. We walked a circular route, up the River Honddu, along some roads and then up the hill which is named "Pen-y-crug". It's only 331m high but was still a bit of a climb, especially when we reached the earthworks of the hillfort which is on the top of the hill. Down the other side we crossed fields and back into Brecon at the council estate end of town. Back in town we dropped into Morry's for some nice fresh pasta to cook on our new camp cooker.
