Went to Taronga Zoo today. Great fun! They have Walk-in areas where you can be close to the animals... you can even touch them, if you want an international incident on your hands!! (Sadly, I've hit quota for the month, so I passed up on that opportunity...)

We got there bright and early (Kitty wanted to get there early, and I didn't see why. Then I got there and saw the line, and understood; this zoo is actually POPULAR. And no, not just with schools... everybody!). First off, went to the area where I could see all the native animals of Aus... and interesting they were! The Koalas I got within spitting distance of, and got a picture. The Wallabies, same deal, walk-in-pen style. The Platypi... very cute, but Kitty is right; God was D-r-u-n-k when he made them. Still, very cute. Saw hopping mice, saw a wombat (sleeping), saw dingoes (from far-off), saw TWO saltwater crocs... one of them might have winked at me... they were stealthy. Saw lots of other animals, too (Kitty loved the regal pose of the tigers). We watched the feeding of the Chimpanzees. Chimps are cute; the kids are adorable, and you sympathize with the adults. The kids have a little white tuft of fur on their butts that acts as a signal to others to let them get away with things.

Funny thing about the chimps, though. There was a big picture-book on the viewing rail, for families to puruse... talked about chimp facial expressions, diet, etc. It also had a section talking about mating. It explained this process in detail. And there were pictures.
Mind you, this book was all illustration, but that just proved as a more effective visual aid in the description of mating habits... you know how Japanese Pillow Books have characters with enlarged genitalia? Image a book that can increase the size (and subsequent visual impact) of a female Chimpanzee's big red ass. Yeah, and it shows Mr. Dominant checking out her billboard-buttocks, with no inhibition about his being caught glancing. Yeah, not something you'd find in the states... funny, though. I thought it was more mature to give the children a taste of the subject matter, than our current style of hiding it like an Orwellian Agency...

Anyway, had some tomato-basil-tuna on rice-bread-thin-crepe-like-things for a snack. Had some ice cream. It was good. Saw the seal show, which was much more brief than I thought it would be. Very short, but enjoyable. Saw the Bird show, which was FANTASTIC. I waved at a giraffe as we were leaving, and it watched me go, while constantly licking its lips with its black tongue. I hope it was just being friendly.

The par-tay.

So that night, we go to "The Rose" (not the bar's real name) in Chippendale to meet up with Kitty's friend Tash to celebrate her birthday. It's crowded, it's noisy, but within half an hour we manage to secure a table, and nurse some drinks slowly. Time passes, we call and ask where she is. She's going to be late... was getting a surprise bath and champaigne. Right, well, we wait... she's on her way. We wait; she's there, she says ont he phone. Where? There, there! Where? Turns out, she's at "The Rose" (See above Parentheses) in Erskinville, the next 'burb over. D'oh! So, we abandon the table... which has 5 other chairs at it, which we've been minding for about 1.5-2 hours at that point, in the middle of the crowded bar, during the big Aus-NZ game (Wallabies Vs. All-Blacks, BIG game... got to see the Haka, which was cool, though).

So we drive like mad people (see: Kitty's normal driving, +speed). We get there. Now the party is at the Thai place across the street from the bar. We get there, get seated, and things go on nicely. I meet Tash, who's an adorable lil' thing, and lots of her friends, who are nice. We have champaigne, and everyone at the table goes out for a smoke at one point, save me and another lady, whom I talk to about teaching and theatre (and ^we^ get first dibs on the appetizers). Kitty comes back with another bottle of champaigne (as a nice gift to Tash) and a Cuban Cigar for me (My lovely, thoughtful girl!). It was a Romeo Y Julieta. I think it was a Blunt-style, as they're called.

Anyway, I try Chicken Pad Thai... Pad Thai is AWESOME! And there was so much food, none of us could finish it all (probably due to all the rice we ate, and the appetizers). And then there was a rice and cocoa cake for Tash, which we all had small pieces of. Then we went home, 'cause we were exhausted (most of the rest of the party either split or went with Tash to a bar... she was very nice to me. Said she felt like she knew me through Kitty. I was touched). Kitty and I got to take the half-full champaigne bottle home. Awesomeness.

What else did I do this week? Helped Kitty's folks with cleaning the main room in prep for painting it. Apparantly they want us to get a cheap vacuum to clean the room with, saying the fine dust from the walls will kill the motor. And I'm supposed to scrape the wallpaper off by next Friday. Joy.
