this area of the world is not really all i hoped it
would be, mostly because i don't have the time or money to make it past
a border town. it happens to look a lot like shitty eastern new mexico.
imagine, if you will, clines corners sans the large yellow tourist
centre, plus a lot of cyrillic writing and strange-sounding language.
that's about where we're at with mongolia. i fully plan on coming back
here when i can do it right, but for now, at least, it's a new
experience.
last night in hohhot, i stumbled into a little bar that boasted a heineken sign, feeling a might desperate for something familiar. after making small talk with the young waiter and quaffing a corona (the heineken truck wouldn't arrive 'till tomrrow, he said), a young australian woman wandered in, and the waiter did us a favor and brought her to my table. her name is rebecca and she's traveling alone - doing an overland route from australia, through indonesia and malaysia, into southeast asia, through china, mongolia, russia, and finally to the UK, where she has a working holiday visa. we had a nice chat and ended up being targeted by a large group of drunk policemen. by targeted, i mean, purchased a lot of drinks by. anyway, they were funny and rebecca and i had a nice time.
this morning, i took a creaky, hot bus full of mongolians to the border. it's a dusty town boasting ... well, not a hell of a lot. but more on that later.
