This morning, we dropped out of the mountains and pulled into the colonial town of Suchitoto, the first capital of El Salvador. It's a cute, peaceful town overlooking a beautiful (artificial) lake. The city is quite the cultural hub, and interesting art can be found around every corner. The restaurant/hotel where we are staying has a particularly compelling collection of pieces constructed out of old artillary from the civil war (the highlight of which is scale weighing a bomb against a stack of tortillas). After poking our noses into a few art galleries, we walked down to the "centro de touristica" on the shore of the lake. It was a bit rainy, but we got talked into taking a quick boat ride around an island full of ducks. It was actually quite nice to be out on the lake, which provided much better views of the surrounding mountains. That night, we went PUPUSA CRAZY!! (I don't even remember how many we downed, but we visited two different stands and capped our feast off with GRANDE pupusas). We capped the evening by relaxig in the main square, which has some interesting sculptures of Don Quijote on display. Suchitoto was a very pleasant and relaxing town, but (even though we didn't make it to the waterfall) I think one day was enough.
