india lite

incase you don't notice the date of this post, I'll point it out for ya - my birthday!!! we've been relaxing in goa for far too long, but my big day proved to be a vortex sucking us into this beach life of gluttony & sloth further & further. as I've said before - there's not much to report when you're spending time on the beach: wake up (late), eat, lie in the sun, take a nap, get tired, take another nap, swim a little, eat again, sleep. lather. rinse. repeat.

tho ironically in this case, we're hardly spending ANY time on the actual beach cause hot-damn, this place is british-package-tour HELL. these are the most crowded beaches I've ever seen...full of some of the most irritating people I've ever seen (clearly england has a midwest too. and their cancun is goa.). and consequently the town is full of lame pubs and cheesy restaurants and more tourists than locals and doesn't feel like india at all (at least not the in-your-face brand we've been submerged in teh past month) - it's india lite...which is sort-of refreshing after all that chaos we've been through, but - as we remind ourselves - is NOT what we're traveling for and so you feel a little guilty and put-off by how easy it is here. add to this that the days of insane goa psy trance parties till dawn have long since departed and there was very little to redeem this place. except 2 - and they kept us happy for a week:

1 - a guest house with a pool NOT surrounded by creepy, gawking indian men. needless to say, I camped out there more than the beach (ummmm....I never actually went to the beach). but by the end, my hair turned green from the chlorine.

2 - steak. and not just of the barely passing, tough-as-nails variety. but of the this-could-hold-its-own-in-the-US-it's-so-freekin-good-but-this-steak-wins-cause-it-only-costs-$2 vareity! never mind our intestines had a HUGE issue swinging from all-veg to all-meat...(wont go into details). but I'm figuring a well balanced diet can't be looked at on a daily basis anymore - only monthly. some days I only eat bananas....some days only meat....some veggies....it all evens out in the end, right?

anywhoo, the b-day was great - chilled at the pool, made a little art (I'll mail the stuff soon josh! and paul....the inspiration finally hit and it's underway :), ate meat and finally stumbled across a good DJ spinning suprisingly great house music (our fave) so can't complain.

OK, can complain. a little..... :) ...... despite still being on the road (woo-hoo!) it was more than a little traumatic to know this is b-day #38 (booo!) and realizing I'm loosing my colorado fitness fast and furiously - never been in such horrible shape! but we've vowed to do more sit-ups - especially if we have a room with a TV. and I'm making plans to stop traveling after nepal (wont make that RTW club afterall, unless they fly me home via london) to get back into settled life, regular exercise, art, etc etc.

last year I was in lima, peru with great friends. this year it's baga, india with a great friend. see? I'm done with complaining. life is GREAT!

crowded goa - aarghhhhh! we could only make it to the beaches for dinner otherwise we lived by the pool (psssst....at one point peds was so asleep he fell off the deck chair) fishing on a less-touristic beach up north all that work to catch these scrawny things sunset over the river on the way home (we rented a moto bike again) india is so dirty, peds - the chronic nail-biter - is clipping his nails for the first time in his life! I'll never take another picture over my shoulder ok, THIS time I really mean it 'I'll never take a picture over....' best view for a sink (it really works) sunset over a secluded beach we found (that's my head in lower right corner - the only swimming I did in goa) mmmm...my happy birthday breakfast: oat flakes, COLD milk (most places serve is hot), OJ. one of my b-day dinners - at the french restaurant art night - peds is painting a spiral on the ceiling fan collage 1 for an art swap I'm doing with josh in the US- it's on the way josh! collage 2 (and how india makes me feel)
