didn't exactly get to the beaches....yet. spent 2 days 'stuck' in penaji waiting for inida air office to open on monday so peds could change his flight. so we killed 2 days renting a motobike and tooling around coutnryside. typical local sights (cows, women in saris, burning garbage, etc etc) compounded with a road grime collecting on our faces that was sooooo beyond expectation....worse than anything asia could dish out.
oh yeah, and I took a HUGE digger on a sidewalk in penaji our first night in. we'd just gotten in to town (after those 15+ hrs of train travel, on top of a day touring the caves) - I had a small backpack on my chest, large pack on my back. we're exhausted, running around, looking for a (cheap) room. and then I completely failed to notice the open sewer running next to the sidewalk, stepped right into it (aka: down), my shin hit the sidewalk and the pain forced me to immediately crumple on the ground. the weight of my backpack pile-drove me to the ground. thank shiva the little pack on my chest broke the fall, but then I was pinned by the wieght of my big pack. I ended up in my best turtle pose on the sidewalk - arms and legs flailing out to the sides. the pain on my shin was hella-intense! ....but then I just started laughing. what a fool I must've looked like.
the gash was long and deep - I bled for a day solid. even left blood on the sidewalk. been dilligently changing bandaids (remember how dirty this country is....), and it's screwed my plans of jumping in the ocean. serious bummer!
in the end, peds made air changes over the phone so was no need to stay in this town for 3 days afterall. doh! (tho did find a couple excellent restaurants that served STEAK so was worth it).
tomorrow we hit infamous goa beaches so all's good.
