quickly realizing that in india, the 'bus ride from hell' concept isn't a one-time deal, it's pretty much a guarantee everytime you get on...this time the theme was 'puke bus'.
we tried to get a train from naini tal to jaipur but was sold out. since we HAD to get to jaipur by 2 nov to see the cricket, had no choice but to bus it. already had a wave of fear and panic, but what you gonna do?
the first bus only went as far as delhi - we loaded up on sleeping tabs and actually managed a snooze or two. SO needed cause there was an instant puke-fest on the curvy roads getting out of the mountains. 1/2 the windows were wide open with at least one local hanging out, letting it all out. clearly some didn't make it to the windows tho, cause the bus REAKED for the next 6 hours. oy.
we land *again* in the chaos of delhi, groggy and still drugged up, but forced to shove away pushy rick-shaw drivers, bargain for bus tix to jaipur, and not loose our cool (still have that bet going). our next bus has already had the puke-fest cause the first seats we pick have a newspaper covering a slimy mass of 'road pizza' on the floor. ewwwwww.... we pick new seats. but that's not all - by the time we wake up again, peds has 'food' on his arm - came from the window above us. we're not thinking about it anymore than that (but I'm pretty sure it wasn't 'food') (and I'm SO glad I didn't take the window seat) (poor guy) (but damn, he still kept his cool!)
our luck got better after that - landed in jaipur, got a guest house within minutes, quick shower and face paint south african flags on our faces, rush to the cricket stadium (it's been going for 2 hours but there's still 6 hours of play left), pay too much but find seats and finally relax - we made it!
settle in for like 2 seconds and then peds was HOUNDED 'cause of the face paint - school boys surrounded him for most the game. there was even a wave of autograph seakers. s africa lost (and are out of the tourney) but was still a great time!
at the game, we met harry - indian guy from jaipur but living in australia and plays pro cricket. we've been hanging out with him and his friends ever since and have had a great time!
two nights ago we saw our first bollywood flick - 'the don' - 100% testosterone-driven action movie but still had singing/dancing throughout. can't wait to see our next one - I'm a huge fan of the bollywood formula. and the theater we were in was HUGE, amazing sound system. aside from a rat running over my foot (we saw it when we were leaving so that's no joke) and the perv who flashed me in the womans toilet, it was the most amazing theater I've ever been in.
last night we went to our first indian club. the guys convinced these local girls to go for the first hour to get them in (club has a 'couples only' policy), then we shook our indian groove thang with the greatest mix of peeps. women in saris, men in turbans, bollywood film star wanna be-s, etc etc. what a great night. you haven't lived until you see a woman in a sari dirty dancing to hip hop...(sari ho). was AWESOME!
have a day more to wander around, then it's off to mumbai (by train!). we may jump off sooner - neither of us is too intersted in another big city, but then it's south to the beaches as fast as possible. we're feeling the urge to find calm (if that's possible) and are clearly ODing on indian food cause we're staying near a pizza hut and have eaten there twice....(after eating at no more than 5 US fast-food places in the past year)
