happy b-day to me!

Text written in: English

after the wicked cold night of camping, we drove towards the austrlian alps (more or less) in search of snow and trails. but damn oz-  these things come with a price. $22AU to get in the nat'l park, $22 to rent the required snow chains (despite the sun blazing EVERYWHERE), $25pp for the chair lift ride to get to the trails... whatever! don't they know we're broke backpackers?

in any case, was an all right drive. saw snow from a distance (some is better than none!). counted road kill. hiked around the reservoir (was seriously reminded of lake dillon/summit county. and was SERIOUSLY homesick!!!). drowned our sorrows in chocolate shakes and sunshine.

after a couple hours, it was back to canberra - bizarro city. had to pick up petros' stuff from before. at least we ate killer indian food and got our indian visas (I'm getting so excited!!!!).

as for the b-day - I've officially been on the road for a year now. 25 sept I landed in lima, peru with deirdre. and hurray I'm not sick of it yet! shee-ite. not even close.

so far the passport stamps include: peru, bolivia, chile, argentina, uruguay, brazil, US, cambodia, viet nam, laos, thailand, malaysia, australia. next year's additions will probably only be india and nepal. clearly my speed is shifting.

well I made this list after south america and happy to say it still holds true now:

'things I'm psyched about'
- I'm way less afraid to ask questions or get help than when I started
- I'll take my time to get the answers I need, no matter how many people are in line behind me
- despite (ALL) my mistakes, I'm still getting around (and with nothing stolen, no muggings, etc - whew!)
- I still like hearing other people's stories and have a few good ones of my own now
- I can walk into a city knowing no one and leave having made long-term friends
- I can make decisions really fast when I want to
- I'm really comfortable living out of my backpack and living a life of few material possessions
- I see the small stupid stuff that lots of people overlook
- just wandering around with no agenda usually leads to the best days (no stunning landmarks or tours required)
- I still get excited like a 6 yr old kid
- I'm dancing a lot
- I love local and street food (just not every day)
- I'm reading great books
- I'm not smoking AT ALL anymore (I'm officially done forever)
- Ideas for art/paintings are settling in
- I haven't regretted this decision for a single minute
