what makes this road 'great'

Text written in: English

clearly we saved the best for last. too bad for the late start, but can tell this will be typical for us. after a leisurely wake up (including the first hot tea cooked over our stove!), we wandered on the beach below our campsite - there's a river flowing into a cove surrounded by rock shelves just begging to be climbed on..

so we were scrambling on these rocks and could have kept going to a beach and more trails. but I chickened out once we got to the outer edge. big waves plus tides-I-don't-know still scare me and I couldn't shake the visions of us getting stranded or worse... :( never mind a group of 4 hikers came through minutes later and did that same route. never mind one of the guys was easily 70 and 2 others were 8 yr old girls......I'm such a chicken shit. (I'm still working on that...)

anywhoo, we still had fun pooping around on the beach trying not to get wet (we got wet), resisting the urge to collect shells (where the heck m I gonna put em?) and wondering if THIS was the biggest wave we'd seen so far.

we finally left the cove, hit the road and stumbled onto the main attraction. damn cool those 12 apostles. they're formed from years of errosion: the waves create rock inlets that eventually errode into rock bridges. the bridges inevitably collapse leaving rock towers. the towers get pounded by relentless southern-sea surf and the shrapnel eats passing ships (loads of shipping disasters here).

but for us, add  beatiful setting sun casting perfect light and it was a jolly good time. at first we were bummed to get there so late, but then we timed the sunset perfect and well, that was just spectacular. once again the pics say it all......oh yeah, and we also saw a southern right whale off the coast of warnnambool - that's a first for me too! and it felt good to be surrounded by peeps speaking foreign languages (this being a major tourist attraction n all). there was even a squat toilet in the ladies room - ha!

now it's back to melbourne - hot showers, soft beds, laundry and internet!!!!
