today we packed up the tent, sleeping bags, stove, etc and headed south towards the 'great ocean drive'. (not to be confused with the 'pretty good ocean drive' just north of here). our plan is to poop around the coast for a week, then back to melbourne for parklife on saturday. curious to see how we fare in the harsh adjustment going from sweet melbourne loft living to tents, cold air, outdoor potties, and scrounging for food everyday. but one good thing about roughing it ('cause car camping is the plan for the rest of oz, too) is it'll make backpacker life in india seem like luxury.
SO, we got as far as torquay (which isn't very far. hooray for roadtrips!). turns out it's the surfer capitol of aus, home of big wave competitions (tho clearly no big waves today, unless you're a surfing oompaloompa), and the first real beach I've seen since landing on this island! we wandered on the beach until we got too cold (it's barely spring here) then went to find our first campspot (we're using a new tent so wanted to leve plenty of daylight between us and setting up our home).
we found a massive rv park - I think this is what we'll find everywhere so......deeeeep breath nance.....get used to australian-style car camping. BUT, let me tell you about a sweet new thing I've discovered (errr....P discovered - I was just along for the ride): if you're at an RV park, and have the option to rent a powered site - rent the powered site! next, buy a weatherproof extension chord for your laptop (you're camping with a laptop, right?), pitch you tent within 7m of the outlet (or 5m if you buy the cheap chord), stock plenty of DVDs, and...well, camping has taken on a whole new level of wonderfulness! we plugged in, powered up and watched 'league of gentleman' a sick brit comedy P is trying to get me hooked on (it's working).
so that first night was excellent and we're both still smiling! who knew car camping would be this good.
