never seen so much rain in my life. I SO needed to leave vang vieng cause when it rains all day, there's nothing else to do but drink. and we did. the night germany lost to italy, it was raining for 7 hours straight. and not just a light thing but a full on down pour. the river was so high they were making people wear life jackets while tubing. it's hard to look hot in a life jacket and all that rain was getting seriously depressing so it was seriously time to leave.
now I'm back in vientiane waiting for luke. internet is fast and cheap so I'm scratching an itch I've had for a loooong time. plus my stomache has felt a little squirly the past few days so happy to just hang out with a bottle of water and bathroom.
spose it doesn't help the gut that I'm finding the most amazing, spicy food I've had in a month or so & can't stop eating it (for all the great vietnamese restaurants in the US, the tourist fare they serve up in the actual country isn't always memorable). last night I had the spiciest seafood stir fry - so hot I got a buzz off it. even my nose got tingly after blowing it. such a great rush! never mind you have to hop over an open sewer to get to the place, if luke's game, we're SO going back.
today's big activity was getting extra pages added to my passport. thank god for sleepy capitol cities and embassies within walking distance. what would take 3 weeks plus $60 in the states or 3 days and cab fare in bangkok I got done in 4 hours for free. and in a strange, unexpected way, it felt nice walking into our embassy - a mini homecoming of sorts. cept for those creepy pics of bush, cheney and rice...
so I'm sending a bunch of stuff back with luke and decided to take pics of a few things I've been collecting before I say b-bye - see the end of this post to get a peek. my favorite are the rusty veggie graters - locals thought I was a stupid tourist for buying them tho I DID get a good deal... in general, most everyone I meet thinks I'm nuts for collecting garbage (one night, something I picked up also included a hiding cockroach so maybe they're right...). but whatever - there's more or less a story behind each thing and it's way cheaper (and smaller) than buying souviners. plus, the longer I hang out with someone, seems they start picking stuff up too. I love it! just gotta do something brilliant with it all someday....
ps - remember those pot fields in sapa that I wrote about? well, my minions of fact checkers did a little research for me and found out a lot of clothes the h'mong make are from hemp. so likely the fields are more for this than for that medicinal reason. hence why there are so many fields, out in the open, unguarded. and maybe why I'm here to tell you about it.
