one night in.....

Text written in: English

talk about culture shock. but in this case it involves beds. for the past month I've couch surfed on some pretty excellent couches - most the time even full on beds - including the brand-new-couch I was on just one night ago in LA. last night...different story. maybe just to smack the awareness into me that those days are over, I opted to crash on the airport tile for 5 hours waiting for the (cheap) bus to start running rather than take a cab and pay for an extra night in my first hostel.

whatever. I actually fell into a complete deep sleep ontop of my backpack/purse/jacket pillow on that tile - another of those minor victories (I CAN sleep anywhere)! and I'm telling you this so you dont think being a backpacker is all great and lovely. it has its shit moments...there were homeless people sleeping in a wing not too far away...this is my life once again.

in my jet lagged haze, don't ask me why it hit at 5am....I realized I didn't know where my camera was. you know when you're so messed up even though the signs are in your face you still dont beleive them? well, I checked every bag and there was no camera. I still dont beleive it. far as I can tell, I took one pic on the plane and maybe it fell out after that. I was packed in 3 deep against a window - I'd be shocked if the internal med doctor from phoenix sitting next to me was the one who stole it....so anywhoo, it's gone, gone, gone.

didnt even land on thailand soil and I jsut lost my most expensive posession (cept maybe the ipod). crap! not sure whats worse - loosing it, loosing the $$ itll cost to replace, or just feeling like a complete idiot. I really think that last bit hurts the most.

so today, I woke up at 2pm (yeah, that part of my life sure doesnt suck!), found out where the electronics mall is (so close to me - how auspicious), and ended up with a better camera than I had for less than I paid for the first one. go grey market! no receipt, no VAT refund, but who cares. it works, I'm better off than before, I'll eat street food for a month to make up the cost.

now that I'm over the pain, I'm starting to soak up bangkok. I havent been here in 3 years. 3 years ago was my first visit to asia and a crazed time in my life. irnoically I'm staying about 5 blocks from that last trip. then, I thought everyone was a thief, god help me if I ate street food (let alone try to order it), trying to get anywhere freaked me out, the traffic-chaos-smog-sounds were overwhelming.

now, the more of the day that went by (and the more I got over this camera thing), the more energized I got. I feel completely safe (especially compared to south america), I'm diving into street food (they have meat on a stick here, too), I'm wandering around after dark. and I forgot how inspiring the street art is. already stumbling across one-off artists selling their stuff on the sidewalk. I want to buy buy buy, but theres no room in my pack. I'll just have to record ideas and twist em into my own. I started embroidering in SA, lots of inspiration to keep it up here.

I'll hang out here for a few more days then I think head to cambodia....will sort it out soon plus learn this new frickin camera....oy.
