/04/06 - Had a lie in! It was so nice to stay in an apartment rather than a hostel! Not too exciting today just trying to find my feet in Chile. I went to the bank (yawn) and then got lost (yawn) trying to find where Soledad works so we could have lunch together. I was only a little late! Had an enormous salad then took the metro (very easy) to the tourist information centre to get a much needed map of Santiago.
/04/06 - I met Julie downtown (I met her in Buenos Aires) and we walked around the main sites including the government building, catedral, central market and then onto Cerro Santa Lucia which is a crazy set of pathways up and down a hill. Most of the pathways, steps and handrails were covered in ants so it was quite an experience! The view from the top was amazing and you could see most of the city, through the smog that is! We then went to the phone box pub for lunch which was ok except I found a piece of chiken in my veggie burrito!! Lucky I didn't eat it! Had a night in the apartment with Soledad and Federico.
/04/06 - Lazy day today - love them sort of days! Internet, shopping, etc. Went to a cool bar for drinks and food with Soledad but can't remember the name - it was in an old house and we had caiparinahs (if that is how I spell it??).
/04/06 - Checked my email and saw that Jess and Jake were in town (you'll hear a lot about these guys most of which I can't put on this website). I met them outside the post office downtown and we wandered around the square taking photos then headed to a veggie place for lunch then walked over to Pablo Nerudas house. This is where the obsession began! We had time for a quick drink in Diegos, before the English tour began, where I tried pisco - Mmm interesting! We were taken round the house by a Pablo enthusiast and Margaret Thatcher hater so we got on like a house on fire! He was such a great guy he even let us take photographs inside the house - Shhh. During the military rule in Chile many of his things (he was a thingest - a collector of things) were stolen, broken and paintings slashed but it still had a lot of charm and was fascinating. The 3 of us then headed to Providencia to meet Soledad for after work drinks in Musa - very nice place.
/04/06 - Got up early to meet my South American Family - Jess and Jake! We were off to visit Pablo Nerudas house in Isla Negra. After Jess, with her fab Spanish skills, worked out which bus we had to take we were on our way. We eventually found the house which is not well sign posted and waited with what seemed hundreds of school children. They were practicing their English by asking us lots of questions! There was a lifesize horse in one of the rooms which Pablo Neruda had wanted since he was a child. When he eventually bought it he threw a party to welcome it to his house. Three of his guests each brought a tail for the horse. The horse now has 3 tails and is named "the happiest horse in the world" as there are no flies buzzing around it due to the 3 tails - how sweet!! No photos of the inside but I took loads of the grounds. The view out to see was stunning as you will see from the photos. Soledad and I headed to Vina del Mar for the weekend.
