We got up early in the morning to leave the Jungle Retreat behind (we were so sad to see it go!) and continue our travels higher into the Nalgiri Mountains to the town of Ooty. Ooty is 2286 meters above sea level and used to be a summer retreat for the British East Indian Company employees. Fittigly we stayed at an old Barracks named for Lord Ratan Tata that was rustic, but quaint. The drive up to Ooty was beautiful, overlooking the valleys of tea plantations, and complete with 36 Hairpin curves, made for some interesting driving moments (in true Indian style of course!). Once we got into Ooty we boarded the toy train (I guess its deemed a toy train if its small enough - rest assured there were no dolls or teddy bears anywhere to be seen) for a 25 min ride to the town of Ketti. Once in Ketti we set off on a 2 hour trek through the hills of tea plantations and eucalyptus forest. This was byfar one of the highlights of the trip for all 3 of us so far. The pictures we took can't even begin to compare the beauty of the mountains of India! It was also great to get out and do some real hiking (most of the older people on our trip were laid up in the hotel with illness) since we've spent a lot of time in transport. On the way back down the mountain we stopped at a tea factory which was mildly interesting, but got to sample some delicious Chai at the end that made it worth while! Back at the hotel we stayed up teaching our leader Peter how to play Canadian Crazy 8's (the Irish have it all wrong) and then bundled up for bed. It gets ridiculously cold here at night! I know, I know, we're Canadians, but our feet were numb this morning on the bus! We had to get up at 5 this morning for travelling back to Cochin so that we'll be ready to leave on our dreaded 48 hour train journey up to Delhi tomrrow. Now this should be interesting! Still no luck with finding a USB connection, but we should be able to find one in Delhi, so there'll be pictures soon!
