The Summer Palace and Dashanzi art district

Yesterday we went to the summer palace which was completely beautiful.  The lake is frozen and though we were nervous at first, we ventured out there eventually for some shots.  I haven't been talking much abou the food, but I've been eating some amazing food: hot pot, dumplings, Thai food, amazing chnses dishes.  I let Xuanr  and Billy order and just enjoy the results.  No disappointment so far.

Today we ventured to the Dashanzi art district which is situated in a really cool industrial area.  Just like in the states, artists move in for the low rent, galleries open and gradually the rents go up.  But the standards are so different here, there will be a world class gallery, right next to squatters conditions and everything in between.  Saw my first rat today if that tells you anything, but it moved much slower than other rats, just like the traffic here, and we just let him go on his way,  he wasn't so menacing.  Went through two awesome books stores, one which reminded me of Stovepipe and the other a fancier 'art books' only kind of place.  Had lunch in a super cool, commie decor cafe.  All of the bauhaus style industrial touches really made the scene.  Lots of the galleries were closed today, but with about 50 total it didn't really matter.  Then came home to another massage: even though she speaks no english, Sung Chao is in danger of  being kidnapped for a trip to the states.....
